The Zentrum für Internationale Friedenseinsätze (ZIF), founded in June 2002 by the federal government and the Bundestag, is a non-profit GmbH based in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. It serves as a central institution for the recruitment, preparation, and placement of civilian personnel for international humanitarian and peace missions as well as election observation missions.
The main mission of the ZIF is to make a German contribution to strengthening international civilian capacities for crisis prevention, conflict resolution, and peace consolidation. The ZIF advocates for the promotion of a "networked approach" between military, police, and civilian actors in peace missions and supports cooperation with international organizations such as the European Union (EU), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the United Nations (UN)[1][2].
The ZIF is engaged in various initiatives to promote sustainable peace:
Since its founding, the ZIF has continuously developed and expanded. With over 80 employees in Berlin and more than 190 seconded personnel in international missions, the ZIF plays an important role in international peace work. Recent crises have underscored the importance of the ZIF's work, and it continues to advocate for the promotion of peace and stability worldwide[2][5].
