The Faculty of Chemistry at Bielefeld University invites applications for a

Professorship in Biochemistry (W3 or W1 TT W3)

to be filled with effect from April 1, 2028.

In the field of 'Experimental Protein Biochemistry', the Faculty of Chemistry is seeking an individual who is already internationally recognized for outstanding research, or an outstanding early-career researcher.

In addition to the expected laboratory-based research into the molecular mechanism of proteins, relevant expertise in computational protein design is highly desirable. A strong commitment to close collaboration with research groups within the Faculty of Chemistry, as well as active participation in current and future research initiatives (e.g., biocatalysis in synthesis, the chemical function of proteins, or the affinity of biomolecules), is expressly expected. The planned research should also complement other existing work at the Faculty—for instance, in relation to molecular medicine—both methodologically and conceptually. Curiosity, creativity, disciplinary openness, and shared responsibility shape the collaboration. In line with the responsibilities, we are seeking an individual who possesses exceptional communication and collaborative skills.

The Faculty of Chemistry values highly the quality of teaching and student mentorship. In terms of teaching, the successful candidate is expected to represent the full breadth of biochemistry within the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in Biochemistry, the Ph.D. program in Chemistry, as well as in other related fields of study.

Prerequisites for employment include a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, a qualified doctorate in the field of biochemistry, and additional academic achievements which will be exclusively and comprehensively evaluated during the appointment process (Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia – HG NRW).

If appointed as a W1 professor (Assistant Professor), the position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of an extension for a further three years following a positive intermediate evaluation. In the event of a positive tenure evaluation in the final year, a subsequent transition to a permanent W3 professorship (Full Professor) is intended. The intermediate and tenure evaluations are governed by the Regulations for Quality Assurance of Professorships with Tenure Track (TT).
