The Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO Düsseldorf) is one of the six major associations of independent welfare organizations in the state capital and a politically independent, non-denominational member association with around 1,800 members. Since its founding in 1919, the AWO Düsseldorf has been committed to a socially just society and is involved as a socio-political interest group, consulting company and direct provider of social services. With around 2,000 full-time employees and around 650 voluntary helpers, the AWO Düsseldorf operates around 150 facilities and supports people of all ages and backgrounds – from children and young people to families and people with a migration background to seniors and people with disabilities.
The range of services offered by the AWO Düsseldorf is diverse and includes child and youth services, family counseling, senior and disability care, school social work, training and qualification, and the integration of refugees into the labor market. The AWO Düsseldorf is also the sponsor of several non-profit subsidiaries: Die Familienglobus gGmbH coordinates child and youth services, the Berufsbildungszentrum gGmbH offers training and qualification for around 1,200 young people and stands for school social work and all-day school, while the VITA gGmbH bundles the work for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Die AWO.DUS GmbH develops flexible and innovative offers for companies to promote the compatibility of work and family life.
The AWO Düsseldorf sees itself as a partner of the municipality in dealing with social challenges and is committed to solidarity, tolerance, freedom, equality and justice. Its motto "Miteinander – Füreinander" reflects the conviction that a solidarity-based cooperation in society is necessary and possible. Cooperation and management in the association are based on the guiding principles of openness, transparency and independent action. The AWO Düsseldorf promotes democratic and social thinking and action and supports people in shaping their lives independently and responsibly.
Sustainability and social responsibility are central concerns of the AWO Düsseldorf. The association acts in social, economic, ecological and international responsibility and is committed to the careful use of resources. The AWO Düsseldorf promotes the participation of employees in the design of the work organization and the workplace and relies on a cooperative management style and transparency of decision-making processes. The AWO Düsseldorf is a member of the Liga Wohlfahrt – a working group of Düsseldorfer welfare associations – and is involved in numerous cooperations with companies and other organizations in order to jointly implement social projects and initiatives.
