The
The Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e.V. (BIB) is a central interest group and the most important professional representation for employees in the library and information sector in Germany. The association was formed in 2000 through the merger of the Verein der Bibliothekare und Assistenten (vba) with the Verein der Diplom-Bibliothekare an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken (VdDB) and currently has around 5,200 members[5][3].
The main task of the BIB is to represent the professional, social and cultural interests of its members. The most important offers include extensive further education and training programs, which are continuously adapted to the requirements of digital change in the library and information sector. In this way, the association supports the professional development of its members and promotes the quality of library work. Other services include building a network for professional exchange, providing up-to-date industry information and organizing important specialist events. Every year, the BIB, together with the Verein Deutscher Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare e. V. organizes nationwide conferences such as the Bibliothekartag and the Bibliothekskongress [5].
The mission of the BIB is to sustainably strengthen the library and information sector and to make the social importance of libraries visible. The values include transparency, commitment and innovation. The BIB stands for the protection of privacy and is committed to processing personal data under the highest security standards [2]. The association promotes diversity and equal opportunities and is actively involved in the further development of the professional environment of its members.
Sustainability goals and initiatives are increasingly the focus of the association's work. These include promoting digital skills, supporting environmentally conscious working methods in libraries, and networking with actors who are driving forward innovative and sustainable solutions for the library sector. Through regular surveys and the involvement of its members in the further development of the association, the BIB ensures that its offers and strategies meet current and future challenges.
The association is currently in a phase of modernization - for example, the "meinBIB" member portal is being technically updated in order to offer members improved service and new opportunities for digital networking [1]. With this, the BIB is consistently focusing on innovation and digitization.
Overall, the Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e.V. positions itself as a competent partner and modern interest group for the library and information industry in Germany - with a focus on commitment, quality and the promotion of sustainable structures in the library sector.
