Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe

The Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) is the central geoscientific authority of the Federal Republic of Germany. It advises the Federal Government on all geoscientific and raw materials management issues. Its core tasks include the exploration and assessment of geo-resources, securing natural resources, protection against geogenic hazards, and international cooperation.

The BGR conducts research and development in the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, soil science and raw materials management. It operates geoscientific measuring networks and databases, creates maps and reports, and carries out projects at home and abroad. A particular focus is on the sustainable use of geo-resources, coping with climate change and adapting to its consequences.

The BGR is strongly committed to sustainability. It investigates the potentials and risks of the energy transition, especially with regard to geothermal energy, energy storage and the availability of critical raw materials for renewable energies. It develops concepts for sustainable raw materials management and is committed to the protection of soils and groundwater. Through its research and advice, the BGR contributes to securing natural resources and minimizing the risks of geogenic hazards. It works closely with national and international partners to address global challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity.
