The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Muskelkranke e.V. (DGM) is the largest and oldest self-help organization for people with neuromuscular diseases in Germany. Founded in 1965, the DGM has over 10,000 members and offers comprehensive support for those affected and their families.
The main mission of the DGM is to improve the quality of life of people with neuromuscular diseases and to promote their self-determination and inclusion in society. The organization sees itself as an advocacy group and is committed to the health and socio-political interests of those affected.
The DGM is committed to transparency and is part of the Transparent Civil Society initiative. It is mainly financed by donations and membership fees in order to achieve its goals. The organization works nationally and internationally with other organizations to strengthen research and support for neuromuscular diseases.
The DGM also operates barrier-free model apartments where those affected can test various aids. Through these initiatives, the DGM helps to improve the quality of life of those affected and to give hope for improved therapies.
