editThe Fernstraßen-Bundesamt (FBA) is a higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). As an independent supervisory and approval authority, the FBA makes a significant contribution to shaping the future of federal trunk roads in Germany.

The FBA performs a variety of sovereign tasks to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the German trunk road network. The central tasks include:
- Planning approval: The FBA is the hearing and planning approval authority for the construction and modification of federal motorways (with exceptions) and federal roads under federal administration. The aim is to optimize and accelerate procedures through uniform specifications, with comprehensive participation opportunities and transparency taking center stage.
- Legal and technical supervision: The FBA exercises legal and technical supervision over the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, insofar as it is entrusted with sovereign tasks. This includes the review of the lawful, appropriate, targeted, economic, qualitative and uniform performance of tasks.
- Dedication, reclassification and withdrawal: The FBA is responsible for the dedication, reclassification and withdrawal of federal trunk roads.
- Line determination: The FBA determines the planning and alignment for federal trunk roads.
- Further tasks: The FBA supports the BMDV in supervising the order administration of the Länder, develops legal and administrative regulations and participates in international cooperation.
