The Hochschulbibliothekszentrum des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen (hbz) is the central institution that supports and innovatively advances the university libraries in NRW.[2][6] As a partner of the North Rhine-Westphalian universities, the hbz offers a wide range of key products and services that are tailored to the changing world of information and media supply.[3]
The hbz recently redesigned its website to offer improved access and user-friendly concepts – a milestone for digital transformation.[1]
The main mission of the hbz is to provide customer-oriented support to university libraries in the face of massive changes in the media landscape. With a new organizational structure – including supplementary management levels for Internal Services (administration, IT) and External Services (customer support) – the hbz strives for excellence in representation, resource utilization and innovation.[3] Core values are Professionalism, Future Orientation and Collaboration: experts advise on service selection, and the hbz represents interests in committees.[2][3]
Quarterly Newsletter and participation in events such as the Bibliothekskongress Leipzig keep the community up to date on developments.[5][6] The hbz also promotes Inclusion through events that also include public libraries.[8]
Although explicit sustainability goals are not highlighted in detail, the hbz integrates sustainable practices into its everyday life: Company Health Management, offers to reconcile family and work and part-time opportunities create a modern working environment.[3] The realignment emphasizes economical use of resources and quality management, which contributes to efficient, environmentally friendly infrastructure in the long term – for example through optimized IT management and digital services that conserve physical resources.
With a focus on digitization and partnership, the hbz is positioning itself as an indispensable driver for the future of university libraries in NRW. It combines expertise in administration, technology and librarianship to make knowledge accessible and usable. Whether license negotiations, publication platforms or support – the hbz makes libraries fit for the next generation.[1][2][3]
