About Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln
editThe Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln is an internationally renowned information, documentation and research center for dance art. Founded in 1948, it preserves and develops testimonies of dance history and the present.
The archive houses a variety of unique holdings, including the estates of important personalities such as La Argentina and Léonide Massine, collections, photographs, programs, reviews, posters, films, diaries, letters, costumes and stage design sketches. These resources are available to scientists, students, journalists, dancers, choreographers, educators and dance lovers from all over the world for their research.
In addition to preserving and developing the holdings, the Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln is dedicated to the scientific processing and presentation of dance history. This is done through exhibitions in the affiliated Tanzmuseum, publications and the promotion of research projects. The Tanzmuseum sees itself as a place of cultural memory, mediation and exchange and motivates its visitors to see the reality of dance "with different eyes".
The Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln publishes its own publications, including presentations on the life and work of prominent dance creators, editions of historical documents and basic works on dance pedagogy. In addition, two book series are published that enable external researchers to publish dance science papers: "Studien und Dokumente zur Tanzwissenschaft" and "Terpsichore". Since 1996, the digital journal "Tanzwissenschaft" has offered a forum for current research results.
The archive actively cooperates with institutions, scientists, artists and universities to promote dance research and support the exchange between theory and practice. It is an affiliated institute of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and a partner in a "Forschungskolleg Tanzwissenschaft", which awards scholarships for top-class research. The Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln also initiates and awards the Tanzwissenschaftspreis NRW, a sponsorship award for young dance scientists.
The Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln strives to continuously develop its diverse range of services and to break new ground in documentation and mediation in order to preserve and promote the importance of dance as a cultural asset.
