The Theater in der Josefstadt, founded in 1788, is the oldest continuously operating theater in Vienna and one of the most renowned stages in the German-speaking world. In addition to the main building in Josefstadt, the Kammerspiele der Josefstadt and the Sträußelsäle also belong to the ensemble.
The theater offers a diverse program that includes both classics of Austrian literature (such as plays by Johann Nestroy, Ferdinand Raimund and Arthur Schnitzler) as well as modern dramas and world premieres. A special focus is on socio-politically relevant topics that are dealt with humor, irony and lightness. The 2025/26 season promises 13 premieres, including world premieres by Daniel Kehlmann, Moritz Rinke and Felix Mitterer.
The Theater in der Josefstadt is known for its top-class actors and productions, which offer the highest acting quality. The close relationship between actors and audience, which is fostered by the intimate architecture of the theater, creates a special atmosphere.
The Theater in der Josefstadt also offers a U30 program for young audiences.
The Theater in der Josefstadt is committed to sustainability and accessibility.
