The JX Fund, founded in April 2022, is an international initiative dedicated to supporting media and journalists who have fled war and crisis regions. As a joint initiative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Rudolf Augstein Foundation, and the Schöpflin Foundation, the JX Fund consolidates numerous aid offers and directs resources where they are most urgently needed.
The main mission of the JX Fund is to support media and journalists in exile quickly and flexibly, allowing them to continue their work immediately after their escape. The fund advocates for the preservation of independent reporting in the journalists' home countries and promotes the diversity of journalistic voices in exile.
The JX Fund stands for the values of press freedom, independence, and sustainability. It works to create an international interface that identifies the needs of media in exile, consolidates aid offers, and fills gaps in services.
The JX Fund aims to build a sustainable landscape for exile media that can continue to reach its target audience in their home countries. This includes:
The JX Fund currently supports media in various regions, particularly in Afghanistan, Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. It responds to current challenges such as the restriction of press freedom in Turkey and digital repression by autocratic regimes in Russia and elsewhere[4].
Through its work, the JX Fund has already achieved significant successes, such as supporting Novaya Gazeta Europe and other independent media that were able to continue their work after fleeing Russia. The fund has also established coworking spaces in Berlin to provide an important point of contact for Russian-speaking exile journalists[2][4].
The JX Fund works closely with a broad alliance of media, civil society organizations, and a large donor base. It is part of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), the largest global network for media development and journalism promotion, and participates in international events such as the Hamburg Week of Press Freedom[4].
Through its efforts, the JX Fund contributes to strengthening press freedom worldwide and supporting independent media in exile so that they can continue to fulfill their critical role in society.
