The Theater Regensburg is one of the leading multi-genre theaters in Bavaria and has shaped the cultural life of the city for over two centuries.[1][3] As an independent municipal company of the city of Regensburg, the theater functions as an important cultural institution that makes art and culture accessible to the general public at the highest level.
The Theater Regensburg operates a comprehensive range of five artistic genres: Musiktheater, Schauspiel, Tanz, Junges Theater und Konzerte.[1] With around 640 performances per season, the house reaches around 180,000 visitors every year, offering an exceptionally diverse program for all target groups.[1][3]
The artistic work is made possible by several venues, including the main theater stage in the three-tiered theater with 520 seats in the main building on Bismarckplatz and other performance venues.[1] The theater cooperates with international houses and artists and focuses on a mixture of proven classics, contemporary productions and experimental premieres.[1]
In the 2025/26 season, which has the motto "EXISTENZEN", the theater presents 29 premieres, 31 concerts and eight revivals - proof of the artistic productivity and innovative strength of the house.[7]
The Theater Regensburg pursues exclusively non-profit purposes in the field of art and culture.[2] The institution sees itself as a place for artistic engagement with social issues and the communication of culture to diverse audiences. Special attention is paid to the Junges Theater and children's and youth theater, which aims to inspire new generations for the performing arts.[2]
Under the artistic direction of Intendant Sebastian Ritschel (since the 2022/23 season), the theater pursues an ambitious program design that combines traditional and innovative formats.[6] The commercial management under Dr. Matthias Schloderer ensures the economic stability of the company.[6]
The Theater Regensburg shows a strong awareness of sustainability and environmental responsibility. The house is the only company in the creative industry to have been awarded a certificate at the Regensburg Environmental Prize - a sign of its commitment to ecological responsibility.[8]
In addition, the theater promotes citizen involvement and participation through its program work, for example through the Bürgertheater and various participatory projects that involve local communities in the artistic process.[1]
A significant milestone in the history of the theater is imminent: In April 2023, the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art announced that the Theater Regensburg would be gradually transformed into a state theater.[3] The theater already bears this new name with the 2025/26 season.[1] This transformation process aims at a paritätische financing between the Free State of Bavaria and the city of Regensburg, while the city of Regensburg remains the sponsor of the theater.[3][6]
The Theater Regensburg has a growing subscriber base, demonstrating the high appreciation by its audience. In the 2019/20 season, the theater recorded over 6,000 subscriptions.[1] In the 2018/19 season, the house generated its own income of just over 3 million euros - proof of its economic performance and the high demand for its offers.[1]
The Theater Regensburg thus embodies a modern, customer-oriented cultural company that combines artistic excellence with social commitment and sustainable business practice.
