The Theater Vorpommern is a dynamic three-theater venue on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which emerged from the fusion of the traditional stages in Stralsund, Greifswald and Putbus. Founded in 1994 through the merger of the Theater Stralsund and Greifswald, the Theater Putbus was integrated in 2006. As a GmbH supported by the cities of Stralsund, Greifswald and the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, as well as funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the state, it has been cultivating music and drama of the highest quality for over 25 years.[1][2][3][4]
The theater delights with a varied program that includes musical theater, drama, ballet and concerts. The centerpiece is the , which emerged in 1994 from the orchestras of the merged houses and continues a rich symphonic tradition under the direction of General Music Directors such as Golo Berg (until 2017) and Florian Csizmadia.[1] Every year, the ensembles present operas, musicals, dramas and dances in the main venues, as well as spectacular that allow the audience to immerse themselves in a unique atmosphere on the Baltic Sea. Three independent venues – Theater Stralsund, Theater Greifswald and Theater Putbus – work together synchronously to create an exciting, varied program that appeals to young and old.[4]
The main mission of the theater is: promoting and cultivating the performing arts through the joint operation of musical theater, ballet, orchestra and drama. Under the artistic direction of Rolf C. Hemke and the commercial management of André Kretzschmar, as well as the supervisory board chairman Gernot Drewes, the institution stands for artistic excellence, regional roots and audience proximity. It combines the cultural treasures of Vorpommern with contemporary productions, builds bridges between tradition and modernity, and strengthens the identity of the Baltic Sea region.[2][3][4] Values such as teamwork – around 190 artistic employees – and high quality standards characterize the ensemble, which continues to work stably despite past financial challenges (e.g. 2016/17).[1][5]
Specific sustainability initiatives are not described in detail in the sources, but the theater is implicitly committed to long-lasting cultural values and regional promotion. The annual financial statements for 2022 confirm a solid financial position with a balance sheet total of over €6.5 million, despite a small loss, which indicates responsible financial management.[5] As a cultural anchor, it promotes education and community, for example through youth work and collaborations, and remains a vibrant part of the typical Baltic landscape.
With its unique three-theater structure, the Theater Vorpommern offers unique experiences that combine art, nature and Baltic Sea feeling – a must for culture enthusiasts.[1][4] (approx. 2480 characters)
