The Zweckverband Abwasser Schlematal (ZAST) is a municipal company that, since its founding on August 15, 1991, has been responsible for wastewater disposal for its member municipalities in the Schlematal. As a public corporation, it provides around 73,500 population equivalents (EW) in municipalities such as Zschorlau (including Albernau and Burkhardtsgrün), Bad Schlema (including Wildbach), Bockau and Eibenstock (OT Sosa) with a modern and reliable infrastructure.[1][3][7]
ZAST operates an extensive network of over 300 km of public sewers, which are predominantly laid out in a combined system. The central Zentrale Kläranlage (ZKA) Schlematal forms the heart of the system, supplemented by fully biological small sewage treatment plants and concepts for combined sewer overflow treatment, which have been largely implemented. With a to public wastewater systems, the association guarantees disposal and treatment in accordance with requirements - .[1][3][6]
The contribution and fee sovereignty has existed since January 1, 1996, after a security re-establishment in 2000. ZAST assumes sovereign tasks and economic management equally, including pretreatment in small sewage treatment plants and transport from cesspools.[1]
In the first phases (1991–2001), ZAST laid the foundations: creation of a wastewater disposal concept, global calculation for contributions and construction of the ZKA Schlematal, confirmed by auditor KPMG. Today, more than 30 years after its foundation, the association has grown from four employees to a team of 42 employees - an average age of 44 years ensures the generational change and skilled workers from the region.[3]
The Mission of ZAST is clear: Wastewater disposal is life support. As a municipal company in public hands, sustainability, economic efficiency and environmental protection are at the center. The slogan "Your wastewater association in municipal hands" underlines the regional connection and reliability towards the member municipalities. ZAST is technically and economically equipped for future challenges, with a focus on high service quality and regional added value.[1][4][6]
Sustainability shapes the work of ZAST: The challenge is to maintain the existing infrastructure in the long term and adapt it to new technical and environmental protection requirements. The combined sewer overflow treatment concept has been essentially implemented, which reduces the risk of flooding and conserves resources. Through personnel policy and skilled worker training, ZAST invests in the future in order to maintain high standards in wastewater treatment - a contribution to the protection of water bodies and habitats in the Erzgebirge.[1][3]
ZAST embodies municipal responsibility: Reliable, innovative and closely rooted in the region, it ensures clean water and a liveable environment.
