The Collaborative Research Center 1671 „Home(s): Phenomena, Practices, Representations“ is an interdisciplinary research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (first funding period), which is dedicated to the task of examining the current and always controversial phenomenon of home for its historical and global relevance.

Subproject B08 examines how references to hometurf(s) / hood(s) are mobilized in rap battles. The research focuses on various dimensions of these processes, such as the construction of difference along spatial and social categories; the use, variation, and evaluation of linguistic, sonic, and performative strategies for referencing hometurf(s) / hood(s); and the incorporation of existing conceptions of places. The subproject “Representation and Construction of Home(s) in Rap Battles” employs a qualitative-empirical approach. The theoretical framework is based on a praxeological approach.

In subproject B08, “Representation and Construction of Home(s) in Rap Battles,” the following part-time (65 percent) position is to be filled as soon as possible on a fixed-term basis for an initial period of 24 months:

Research assistant (f/m/d)

Your tasks:

• Writing a dissertation in musicology
• Collaboration in regular work meetings
• Participation in project-specific research, event formats, and publications
• Participation in collaborations with other subprojects

Your profile:

• An above-average Master’s degree in musicology, ethnomusicology or popular music studies
• Interest in interdisciplinary work, corpus analysis, qualitative research, and methodological reflection
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Very good command of German and English
• Experience with data analysis using QDA software is a plus
• Willingness to undertake research trips of several days in Germany and Austria
