The Kreisstadt Merzig is the official internet portal of the city of Merzig in Saarland and sees itself as a central point of contact for citizens, businesses, visitors, and for everyone who wants to inform themselves about life in the city.[9]
Merzig, with around 30,000 inhabitants and 17 districts, is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Merzig-Waden district.[1] The city positions itself as "City with more possibilities" and combines municipal administration with information on economic development, tourism, culture, sports, and citizen services.[9] A special focus is placed on tourism: through the Tourist Information, Merzig supports inquiries about stays, leisure activities, accommodation, and activities for families, cycling and hiking groups, or conference guests.[3][8]
In terms of content, three themes particularly shape the municipal orientation: Quality of life, Economic strength, and Connection to nature.[1][9] Merzig is considered a "green city" with approximately 80 percent green space and is also the nursery center of the Southwest and the largest municipal forest owner in Saarland.[1] This close connection between urban development and nature is also reflected in the public self-image: Merzig relies on an environment that combines local recreation, sustainable resource use, and attractive living spaces.[1]
The central values of the city therefore include above all Proximity to citizens, Service orientation, and Location development.[8][9] The city's web offering bundles administrative information, cultural offerings, and tourist services in one place, thus facilitating access to municipal services and regional offers.[9] In addition, the strong focus on nature, forests, and green spaces shows that Merzig understands ecological qualities as an important part of its municipal identity.[1]
Sustainability plays a visible role in Merzig, primarily through its natural urban structure and responsible management of its own areas.[1] The high proportion of green spaces, its importance as a municipal forest owner, and the integration of nature, hiking, and cycling themes in its tourist profile indicate a location that links ecological aspects with leisure, recreation, and urban development.[1][3][10]
Overall, Merzig presents itself as a modern, service-oriented, and nature-connected district capital that strategically brings together administration, economy, culture, and tourism, and actively expands its role as a regional center.[1][9]
