Das Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Klima Nordrhein-Westfalen (LANUK) is the central scientific and technical authority of the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, dedicated to the comprehensive protection of nature, the environment and the climate. The authority works closely with the Ministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Verkehr NRW and advises the state government expertly on all relevant environmental issues[1][2].
With around 1,200 employees at main locations in Recklinghausen, Essen and Duisburg, as well as other locations in the state, LANUK combines expertise from various disciplines, including ecology, hydrology, environmental analysis and engineering[2][6]. The authority operates a state-wide network of measuring points to continuously record and evaluate the quality of air, soil and water, and thus document the state of the environment in a transparent and well-founded manner[2][3].
LANUK's core tasks cover a broad spectrum: from nature conservation and landscape management to air pollution control and water protection, to climate and circular economy and plant safety. In addition, it is responsible for the Nationalpark Eifel, which underlines the connection between protection and sustainable nature experience[1][2][3][6].
LANUK's mission is to protect nature and the environment for the benefit of people, animals and plants by providing scientifically sound knowledge and comprehensive advice to politics and administration. Sustainability and climate protection are central guidelines for its work. The authority implements an internal operational environmental and sustainability management system according to EMAS standards and actively promotes climate-neutral administration[2][5].
To promote sustainable development, LANUK also supports companies, organizations and public bodies through a wide range of funding programs financed by the state of NRW, the federal government and the EU. The focus here is on the practical implementation of nature conservation and environmental measures[4].
LANUK is also a strong partner for environmental education and transparency: it makes environmental information publicly available, raises awareness of environmental issues and promotes environmental and climate protection among the population and stakeholders in the state[3][5].
Overall, the Landesamt combines modernity, scientific excellence and sustainability to secure and further develop the quality of life and natural diversity in Nordrhein-Westfalen in the long term.
