editThe Theater und Philharmonie Essen GmbH (TUP) is a renowned multi-venue theater that unites musical theater, ballet, drama, the Essener Philharmoniker and the Philharmonie Essen under one roof. The TUP offers a diverse program ranging from classical operas and ballet performances to contemporary plays and top-class symphony concerts.
The Aalto-Theater, an architectural landmark designed by Alvar Aalto, is the heart of the TUP and houses the Aalto Musiktheater, the Aalto Ballett Essen and the Essener Philharmoniker. The Grillo-Theater is the venue for Schauspiel Essen. The Philharmonie Essen, known for its excellent acoustics, offers a stage for international orchestras and soloists.
The TUP has made it its mission to inspire a wide audience for the performing arts and to contribute to the cultural diversity of the city of Essen and the Ruhr area. With the motto "Neues Deutsches Theater – Resistance" for the 2025/2026 season, Schauspiel Essen invites you to reflect on resistance and the creation of a democratic and equal society.
An important part of the TUP's work is cultural education. With offers such as "Abenteuer Aalto" and "Philharmonie entdecken", children, young people and adults are introduced to the world of theater and music. Workshops, guided tours and special events for schools and groups complement the program.
The TUP values accessibility and offers special tours and events for people with limited mobility.
The TUP is committed to promoting young talent and offers young artists a platform to present themselves and develop further. The composer festival "her:voice" is committed to the visibility of women's musical work.
The TUP strives to be an open and welcoming house for everyone and to contribute to cultural education and social participation.
