About the job

The role: You'll lead the engineering team at the heart of sofatutor's core product – a learning platform used by over a million students, parents, and teachers across the German-speaking market. This is a hands-on leadership role inside a cross-functional unit: you work directly with a Senior Product Lead, Content Leads, and a Staff Engineer, owning both the people and the delivery.

Your team: 10 full-stack engineers (frontend, backend, one mobile). Your context: a product that matters, a strong and experienced leadership group, and real room to shape how engineering works here.

Your Tasks:

Leadership & Team-Performance

Own the structure, leadership, and further development of the Engineers in the team, with a clear focus on outcomes, quality, and sustainable delivery.
You coach Engineers (technically & personally), set up growth plans, and establish effective feedback and performance routines.
You strengthen a collaborative, motivating team culture with ownership, psychological safety, and a high-quality orientation.

Product & Delivery

You work closely with Product, Design, Content, and Technical Leaders on roadmap, prioritization, and implementation—and translate goals into realistic plans.
You continuously refine workflows, agile rituals, and quality standards (e.g., DoR/DoD, release processes, incident learnings).
You ensure that technical decisions, dependencies, and risks are transparent—and actively steer towards solutions.

Hiring & Scaling

You have experience in hiring, designing onboarding processes, and the professional development of Software Engineers.
You build structures that enable scaling (e.g., role/leveling clarity, clear responsibilities, knowledge management).

AI & Innovation

Help your team adopt AI responsibly: the right tools, at the right stage of the development cycle, with clear ownership of what gets shipped.

What you bring to the table:

2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, leading 5+ engineers, including full people leadership responsibility.
A track record of hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers – coaching, feedback cycles, growth frameworks.
Solid hands-on experience in larger web development projects; Ruby on Rails and/or JavaScript experience is a plus.
Enough technical depth to lead architecture discussions and hold your own on code quality
Very good understanding of software development processes, testing, deployment, and modern delivery culture.
Genuine enthusiasm for AI in engineering and the pragmatism to make it work in practice.
