The Faculty of Mathematics at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) has a strong research profile and offers a broad and high-quality teaching portfolio across six degree programmes. It hosts numerous doctoral researchers from Germany and abroad. In addition, it is involved in interdisciplinary projects and makes a substantial contribution to the teaching of fundamental mathematical subjects for other faculties. The advertised professorship is located at the Institute of Mathematical Stochastics, one of the four institutes within the Faculty. As part of the institute’s strategic development, a W2 Professorship in Applied Statistics and Data Science is being advertised concurrently.

We are seeking an individual (d/f/m) with an outstanding academic record in mathematical statistics and its connections to data science, who develops modern statistical methods and analyses them on a rigorous mathematical basis. Possible areas of focus include, for example, statistics for high-dimensional and complex data, theory of machine learning, causal inference, explainable AI, or uncertainty quantification.

The professorship is expected to strengthen the Faculty’s profile and contribute to the strategic development of activities in data science. The successful candidate should be capable of establishing internationally visible research, with interdisciplinary collaborations being particularly welcome, for example with engineering, natural sciences, economics or social sciences, or computer science. Experience in acquiring and playing a leading role in externally funded research projects is also desirable.

The responsibilities of the professorship include teaching in the degree programmes of the Faculty of Mathematics and further development of the Faculty’s Statistics programmes as well as service teaching for other faculties. Teaching should enable students to develop a theoretically grounded and critical approach to statistical methods and AI-based data analysis. Relevant experience in independent teaching and the ability to teach in both German and English are expected.
