The German chemical industry is a major industrial sector and still heavily dependent on fossil feedstocks, in particular natural gas as a source of syngas (CO + H₂). Bicarb2Syn develops an alternative route by directly converting bicarbonate to CO in an electrochemical direct air capture (DAC) process. This energetic shortcut avoids inefficient thermal steps and enables the use of atmospheric CO₂ as a feedstock for green syngas. Under the lead of the deep-tech SME Greenlyte, an innovation alliance with Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) aims to scale the technology demonstrate its industrial availability.
The UDE sub-project focuses on process development and scaling of electrode architectures for direct bicarbonate-to-CO electrolysis. Based on the process and stack design from Greenlyte and catalyst/cell insights from HZB, UDE develops tailored inks and hierarchical supraparticles adapted to bicarbonate electrolytes and suitable for robust, industry-relevant processing. Dispersion-based process chains are established from nanoscale catalyst powders via rheology-optimized slurries and inks to reproducibly coated electrodes for coated catalyst substrate (CCS) and catalyst coated membrane (CCM) architectures, using roll-to-roll-like coating and laser drying.
