What does a sustainability manager do?
Sustainability managers own the development, delivery and steering of an organization's sustainability strategy. They analyse where the company stands ecologically and socially, derive goals and metrics from that, and make sure sustainability doesn't end in a glossy brochure but reaches day-to-day operations.
They work across many interfaces: with leadership on strategy, with departments on delivery, with controlling and reporting on the numbers. ESG regulation — above all the CSRD — increasingly shapes the role: what has to be reported first needs to be measured, steered and improved.
Typical tasks
- Develop the sustainability strategy and back it with goals and metrics
- Run a materiality assessment and prioritise focus areas
- Coordinate and deliver measures across departments
- Capture and analyse the carbon footprint and ESG data
- Produce the sustainability report (CSRD / ESRS, GRI)
- Communicate and build awareness on sustainability internally and externally
What you'll need
Many sustainability managers come via a degree in sustainability management, environmental science, business or engineering. Just as common is the career switch with an added qualification — an IHK, TÜV or university certificate, say. More important than the exact qualification are the ESG know-how and the ability to bring people along.
- An understanding of ESG, carbon accounting and reporting standards
- Analytical thinking and an appetite for data
- Project management and organisational talent
- Strong communication and persuasion
- Persistence to actually make change happen
