ajw – autonome jugendwerkstätten Hamburg e.V. is a non-profit, self-managed association dedicated to youth vocational assistance and financially supported by the city of Hamburg. The main goal of ajw is to pave the way for young people with support needs to lead an independent life and achieve a successful professional qualification through practical training and vocational preparation. The organization offers a variety of training professions such as automotive mechatronics technician, painter, gardener, carpenter or electrician - and this also for young people without a secondary school diploma. In addition to classical training, practical support such as internships and driving license acquisition are made possible, and there is also vocational preparation, retraining in the commercial sector and six-month work and vocational orientations for career starters.

The cooperation between craftsmen and educators in the workshops guarantees individual and holistic support for the trainees. ajw promotes equal opportunities, tolerance and respect and is committed to the equality of women and men, in particular by encouraging women to become involved in traditionally male-dominated craft professions. Discrimination, such as misogynistic sayings, is not tolerated; at least one woman is represented in every training team. ajw sees the diversity of cultures, religions and backgrounds of young people as an enrichment and meets it with openness.

Sustainability and a conscious use of resources are central values at ajw. In addition to social skills, the promotion of a sense of responsibility among young people also includes the economical use of materials and energy in everyday training. ajw is politically and religiously independent and consistently advocates for the interests and needs of the young people in its workshops.

In doing so, ajw makes an important contribution to the professional integration of disadvantaged young people in Hamburg, thus creating long-term prospects for personal and professional development in an inclusive, appreciative community.
