The Rathauspassage Hamburg is a unique social meeting place in the heart of the Hanseatic city, located directly under the Rathausmarkt. It combines Hanseatic gastronomy, an adventure bookstore, a tourist information center, and attractive event and cultural offerings on approximately 1000 square meters of space. As a social haven, the Rathauspassage offers people who have been excluded from working life for a long time a new opportunity for qualification, employment, and integration into the labor market. Social participation and self-determination are at the heart of this.
The gastronomic center is the Cafédrale, where visitors can enjoy Hanseatic specialties, coffee, as well as breakfast and lunch in a cozy atmosphere with a view of the Alsterarkaden. The offer is complemented by the antiquarian bookstore Kehrwieder, a Hamburg-Shop and the tourist information Hamburg (er)leben, which offers guests tips and city tours around the city. The Rathauspassage is therefore both a cultural and social anchor point for locals and tourists alike.
The main mission of the Rathauspassage is to enable socially disadvantaged people to lead a self-determined life through qualified employment in gastronomy, book trade and sales. Around 45 employees, many of whom are long-term unemployed, are supported and encouraged here so that they can expand their skills and be reintegrated into the regular labor market. Profits generated are fully reinvested in social projects, creating sustainable social added value.
Sustainability manifests itself in the Rathauspassage not only socially, but also culturally and ecologically: it is committed to social integration, sustainable consumption through the sale of regional products and awareness of social responsibility. The Passage sees itself as a lighthouse project of the city of Hamburg, which makes an important contribution to the urban community through innovative social work and a diverse cultural program.
Founded in 1998 on the initiative of socially committed Hamburg personalities and supported by the PASSAGE non-profit Gesellschaft für Arbeit und Integration mbH, the Rathauspassage is now a firmly established institution. It embodies lived social inclusion and promotes respectful coexistence in the vibrant center of Hamburg, while also creating space for cultural exchange and encounters.
Overall, the Rathauspassage Hamburg presents itself as an exemplary model for social innovation: a place where social responsibility, cultural diversity, gastronomic quality and tourist attractiveness work together harmoniously to open up new perspectives for people and strengthen urban society.
