DFG Project “Corruption and Civil War: Buying War or Buying Peace?”
The project “Corruption and Civil War: Buying War or Buying Peace?”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and led by Prof. Dr. Natascha Neudorfer, examines how individual perceptions and experiences of corruption affect the likelihood of intrastate conflict. Existing research has focused mainly on the macro level and has produced contradictory findings - corruption appears at times as a driver of civil war and at times as a means of “buying” peace. The project therefore combines theories and methods from political behaviour research with peace and conflict studies and develops a new micro-level theory that explains when corruption fuels conflict and when, less often, it contributes to stability. Methodologically, the project combines illustrative qualitative case studies (e.g. Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo) with quantitative analyses of large survey and conflict data sets using multilevel models and machine learning methods.
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the project on 1 April 2027. The postdoc will take largely independent responsibility for the project's quantitative work package and will work closely with the principal investigator. The position offers the opportunity to lead the writing of your own publications and to sharpen your academic profile in internationally comparative research on corruption and conflict.Your tasks:
